To create this rounded box, I made a square box then rough cut gentle curves on all aspects of the piece. These curves are smoothed using a hand plane and card scraper. The effect is very pleasing to the eye with a gentle arched bottom gracefully flowing into a curved top. The overall size of the piece is 11" long x 7" wide x 3 ½" tall, the inside is 9 ½" x 5 ½" x 2" deep. The top is Cherry with a strip of Walnut laminated into the handle. The handle is curved from the bottom to match the curved cut out in the top of the box. The top pivots on two brass pins. If you look closely near the bottom right hand corner of the top you will see two small worm holes that I chose to leave as is they add a bit of character to the piece.
